I thought the music video was alright. It didn’t go in the direction that I was expecting. Jo, however, was fantastic and Gaga played him brilliantly. But in terms of the video as a whole, it was more of Gaga’s interest in self imagery, as opposed to tributing to the song itself.
I noticed while watching the video, I became incredibly sad as it was a clear reflection of the way Lady Gaga views herself. In many interviews Gaga talks openly about how she wants to be someone strong for her fans, & her songs reflect that strength.
But I think of her music videos as her drawing board. She can represent her deepest thoughts in the video imagery and get away with it, because most people are simply trying to figure out the association between the song & the video. The key to understanding her music videos is to completely pull the song out of the picture, and consume the images as a completely new story.
Watching Gaga’s music videos is a reminder that she is incredibly human. Despite her fame and record selling albums Lady Gaga still struggles with self confidence. An example of this is the torture/transformation scenes in the music video.
I have to say my favorite Gaga videos are the one’s that directly tell the story of the song, like Judas.
But I am grateful that Lady Gaga has a way of portraying the person she feels inside, even if that person is a less than a confident “superstar”.
I believe it’s a treat to those who have the eyes to see it.
